For the first time since its establishment eighteen years ago the Philosophy Olympiad is being held in the country where western philosophy was born. (As everyone knows, even the word “philosophy” is Greek.) This year’s official round-table discussion will concern “The history of philosophy”—a most fitting choice of topic largely for two reasons: first, because philosophy began as a branch of generic “historie”, that is (literally) “enquiry” and second, because, as noted, the development of the discipline began—almost startlingly-- and continued for many centuries in the Greek world. Today philosophy, despite the ups and downs of the world across the millennia, remains one of the most enduring and creative aspects of ancient Greek achievement.

Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies (Greece) (http://www.greece.chs.harvard.edu), together with the University of Patras (http://www.upatras.gr), under the aegis of the Greek Ministry of Education (http://www.ypepth.gr), and with the financial support of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (http://www.eot.gr) has organised IPO 2010.
For over four decades, the Center’s mother institution in Washington, D.C. (http://www.chs.harvard.edu) has sponsored research into ancient Greek philosophy, among other areas. The Center’s junior fellows in philosophy have gone on to teach and generally to promote the discipline at leading international institutions. Both the CHS and its branch in Greece are in fact devoted to furthering the study of hellenismos at all academic levels from elementary school to the postdoctoral stage and beyond.
It is this commitment to outreach in particular that makes us proud to be part of IPO 2010.

IOANNIS PETROPOULOS, CHAIRMAN OF THE GREEK NATIONAL ORGINISING COMMITTEE, DIRECTOR OF HARVRAD'S CENTER FOR HELLENIC STUDIES IN GREECE
