Final ranking: Golden
medal: Aljaž Jelenko For the first time since its establishment eighteen years ago the Philosophy Olympiad is being held in the country where western philosophy was born. (As everyone knows, even the word “philosophy” is Greek.) This year’s official round-table discussion will concern “The history of philosophy”—a most fitting choice of topic largely for two reasons: first, because philosophy began as a branch of generic “historie”, that is (literally) “enquiry” and second, because, as noted, the development of the discipline began—almost startlingly-- and continued for many centuries in the Greek world. Today philosophy, despite the ups and downs of the world across the millennia, remains one of the most enduring and creative aspects of ancient Greek achievement. Harvard University’s
